GROWTH OR FEAR
Thresholds are places of transition, mental and physical. Is it curiosity, wonder or even boredom which entices us to cross new thresholds? Why do we decide not to cross a threshold? Is it fear?
DOORS! I had thought about that a fair bit when I was in Central America. How much there is to a door, and how perfunctory and unconscious they are (where I live). Now that I see someone thinking so much about doors, I'm disappointed I didn't do that photo collecting I wanted to do of doors, windows and metalwork around them.
Yes the dimensions matter...and the colour, the density/thickness, the fittings, the presence or absence of windows.
My favourite doors are unpainted, heavy wood and larger than standard. They have engraving/trimming and design without being pompous or overly ornate.
They have a knocker.
They give me the feeling that passing through is significant. That something has changed. That the separation between where I was and where I will be is definite. That there is both safety inside and freedom from the demands of the world outside.
I am interested in the power of doors! Especially the doors of our 'homes'. I want to hear from anyone who has an anecdote, story, photo, artwork or a just an idea or feeling for the significance of the domestic door. Contact me, as well, if you have feelings about the less visible thresholds or boundaries in your dwelling place. Have they the same uses for you as for your parents or your children? Have you a strong memory of crossing a physical or imagined threshold or passing through a particular doorway in your home?
What do you think about the pictures I have posted? Does the size or shape of a door matter to you? What would you like to see in the future home? Have you different feelings about the doors to holiday 'homes', foreign 'homes'? Let me know.
Can we tell who or what lies behind a particular door as we pass it by and how do we personalise our doors to let others know who we are or want to be? Send me your visions for your perfect door, telling me why it works better than the one you have already or photographs of doorways that mean something to you.

Hi Cathrine,
ReplyDeletethanks for your thoughts about doors. I agree with your taste. Go take some photos!
